TOEFL EXAM

The TOEFL examination is a premiere screening method for top universities that measures various skills through 4 sections. The four modules of TOEFL are reading, listening, writing, and speaking covering the TOEFL test format. Based on the responses of these 4 sections of the examination, the scores are given. The TOEFL syllabus for four of them is as follows.

TOEFL Reading Syllabus

The reading section of TOEFL is all about reading the passages and answering the questions asked. In this section, you are assessed and marked based on your reading and understanding abilities.

• 3 to 4 passages of around 700 words each are given.
• You need to read the passages and then answer the questions that are set from the passage.
• The passages will be of diverse interest and based on educational topics. They are taken from university-level textbooks and study materials.
• The students are marked on how well they read and utilize the materials provided in the English language.

TOEFL Listening Syllabus

The second section of the TOEFL exam is the listening section. The TOEFL syllabus for listening is sketched to measure the listening and interpreting skills of the candidates.

• There will be recorded lectures and conversations. You will have to listen to it and then give answers to them.
• 4 to 5 lectures that will be 3 to 5 minutes long and will have 500-800 words with 6 questions each and the total no of questions will be 30.
• 2 to 3 conversations that will be for more than 3 minutes. There will be 12 to 25 exchanges and there will be 5 questions each.
• These recordings will be in the accents of native English speakers from countries like the United States, Australia, Canada, Europe, etc
• You need to be very careful in this section, as they can listen to a conversation or recording only once.
• The questions will be based on:
  1. Basic comprehension.
  2. Connecting, analysing, and interpreting the available information.
  3. Pragmatic understanding, attitude, and certainty.

You need to have a good understanding of international English accents. This is done so that you are made familiar with the accent that they will find during the study abroad opportunities.

TOEFL Speaking Syllabus

The third section is the TOEFL speaking section. This section is designed to test and measure the speaking skills and fluency of the candidate in the English language. The English fluency in an academic setting is measured under the speaking section of TOEFL.

• There will be a total of 4 tasks that will be completely based on the situations that you will face while studying at an international Institution.
• The first task will be ‘independent speaking’, where you will be free to speak about your experiences, ideas, views, understanding and your own values.
• The remaining three tasks will be ‘integrated speaking’. The task will be as follows read-listen-speak.

TOEFL Writing Syllabus

The last module of the TOEFL exam is the writing module. It is entirely focused on the writing abilities of the students. This section has 2 types of tasks-integrated and independent writing. Here are its detail:

• Integrated writing - Here you will first listen to short audio clips, passages, and educational lectures. After listening to these audios, you need to draft a passage based on everything you have understood in your own words. The whole passage should be based on individual understanding and vocabulary.
• Independent writing - Under this task, you need to write a passage based on your individual opinion and experience in response to some viewpoint or argument. Using words and tone in the right way will help you score high in this section.

The Writing section will assess and test your ability to put down all your thoughts and understanding in the correct English by maintaining a proper structure and format. You need to have a good command of the basics of the English language. Only then will you be able to put forward your thoughts and ideas.
