GRE EXAM

GRE is one of the popular tests accepted at universities for admitting international students. Knowing the correct GRE Pattern and Format is compulsory if you want to prepare well for the GRE. Overall, you will have about 3 hours 30 minutes for the paper GRE, with a 10-minute break after the second section. Here we present the complete information on the GRE pattern.

GRE Analytical Writing Test Pattern

This section features 2 different essay questions. It will be 30 minutes per task which makes it a total of 60 minutes. Score Ranges from 0 to 6, 0.5 point Increment. Here are the details of each task:

“Analyze an Issue”
  • For this essay, you will get a prompt consisting of 2 parts.
  • First, is a general statement positing a broad idea, policy, or issue.
  • Second, a writing prompt asking you to agree with, disagree with or find some middle ground on the statement.
  • Your task is to write an essay that convenience someone else your position is right, using evidence and examples from current events, history, and your experience.

“Analyze an Argument”
  • For this essay, you will also get a prompt consisting of 2 parts.
  • A paragraph-long argument proving or disproving a thesis with several pieces of evidence is the first prompt.
  • A writing prompt directing you to analyze the weaknesses in the argument’s structure is the second prompt.
  • Your task is to examine problems with the argument’s logic, with its use of evidence, missing or incomplete information, and errors in its underlying assumptions.
 

GRE Verbal Reasoning Test Pattern

There are 2 sections to Verbal reasoning. Each of the 2 Verbal Reasoning sections contains 3 types of questions. Score Range from 130 to 170, 1 point Increment. Here are the details of each task:


Reading Comprehension

In the Reading Comprehension question, you will be given passages that may have one paragraph to several paragraphs each. There are 3 possible Reading Comprehension question types:

  1. Multiple Choice Question in which you have to select 1 answer
  2. Multiple Choice in which you have to select 1 or more answers
  3. Select-in-passage asks students to select 1 sentence in the passage that meets the description posed in the question.

Sentence Equivalence
  • Sentence Equivalence Questions ask you to fill 1 blank with 2 correct answers to a single sentence.
  • You will be given six answer choices to select any 2 of them which may fit in the blank. You must select the 2 words from the given choices that complete the sentence, fit its meaning, and build completed sentences that are similar in meaning.
  • To gain the score for a correct answer your both choices must be correct, you will not gain partial credit for selecting only 1 of the 2 correct fill-in choices.

Text Completion
  • Questions in text completion consist of a passage of 1-5 sentences with 1-3 keywords or phrases missing in it.
  • There are 3 answers per blank, or 5 answers if there is only 1 blank. There is 1 correct answer, among them consisting of 1 choice for each blank. Your task is to find the right word from a multiple-choice list.
  • Make sure that each word selection contributes to reconstructing a sensible and meaningful passage.
  • You need to correctly identify all the missing words to get points for the question.
 

GRE Quantitative Reasoning Test Pattern

The Quantitative Reasoning module of GRE has 2 sections, each consisting of 20 questions which should be completed within 35 minutes. Score Ranges from 130 to 170, 1 point Increment. Here are the details of each task:


Compare quantities
  • There are 6 to 8 questions
  • In these kinds of questions, you are required to do a comparison between the 2 given quantities such as “A” and “B”
  • You have to determine if 1 is larger than the other, if they are equal, or if there’s not enough info to know.

Data Interpretation or Graphs
  • There are 5 to 7 questions
  • Here you are required to evaluate the given information and choose a correct answer based on visual graphs and tables.
  • You need to understand the data given in those forms and select the correct answer accordingly.
  • These questions are multiple-choice questions that ask you to choose only 1 answer choice from the given list or to select 1 or more answer choices from the given

Numeric Entry questions
  • There are 2 questions
  • Here you are required to enter your answer in an answer box instead of choosing among options.
  • Here you are asked either to input the answer as a fraction in 2 different boxes, 1 for the numerator and another 1 for the denominator, or to input your answer as a decimal or integer in the given single box.
