IELTS is one of the tests in which you need to score high bands as much as you can to get admission to international universities.  Having a good understanding level of the English language does not assure you an excellent score in the IELTS. Often the more successful students are better prepared as per the IELTS syllabus and therefore obtain better results. Here we have presented the complete syllabus of IELTS.

The IELTS exam consists of sections. Each has a specific time limit to complete. Here is the time duration for each IELTS section:

IELTS Syllabus for the Listening section
The IELTS syllabus for the Listening part includes 4 units. The difficulty level will increase with each passing unit. It will include either a speech or a dialogue which starts with a short introduction telling about the condition and the speakers. Then you will have some time to look over questions. The IELTS Syllabus is the same for both Academic and General Training. It includes 4 sections of  40 items. They are as follows :
  1. One is a conversation between two individuals.
  2. The second is a monologue/speech.
  3. The third section is a conversation among a maximum of 4 candidates arranged in an academic setting.
  4. The fourth one is a speech on an academic subject.

IELTS Syllabus for the Reading section
In the IELTS Reading section, there are 40 questions from 3 passages. This section must be answered in 60 minutes. The level of difficulty increases with each section. So you have to manage the time according to the difficulty level:
  1. The 1st passage should be assigned 15 minutes,
  2. The 2nd passage should be assigned 20 minutes
  3. The 3rd passage should be assigned 25 minutes.
1. IELTS Academic reading: It will have 3 long paragraphs. These paragraphs will be analytical, descriptive, and based on facts. These paragraphs are generally taken from books,  articles, newsletters, and journals.
2. IELTS General Training Reading: This portion is relatively easier because it will have topics that the students come across in their routine lives. The 3 reading passages will be based on topics like pamphlets, brochures, and advertising among others.

IELTS Syllabus for Writing Section
  • In the IELTS Writing section, there are 2 tasks.
  • Task 1 will be either a letter-writing or a graph description. You will need to write a 150-word essay after examining and understanding the graphical representations, diagrams, tables, and data. As Task 1 is solely descriptive, write down exactly what you see.
  • Task 2 is an essay. Here you need to prepare an essay in your own words based on a view, idea, or argument.
  •  IELTS Academic writing: Here the topics are based on general interest and are meant for students applying for a postgraduate or undergraduate degree.
  • The General writing module has 2 tasks, but the level will be easier than the Academic module. A letter must be written based on the given situation.
